Small kitchen ideas for Teesside terraces

The five fixes that transform a narrow Teesside terrace kitchen: shallow-depth units on one run, tall larders into chimney alcoves, worktop-depth traded for walkway, light-coloured doors with under-unit lighting, and a layout designed around the room as measured rather than as the showroom imagined it. From £600 for doors to £5,000 for a full redesign and install.

The terrace galley, respected

The Victorian and Edwardian terraces of Middlesbrough, Saltburn, Norton and the Headland share a kitchen archetype: two to two-and-a-half metres wide, three to four long, a chimney breast eating one wall, a door and window arguing at the ends. Showroom software hates these rooms; their standard modules leave dead corners and pinched walkways. But a galley designed for its actual dimensions is one of the most efficient kitchens there is, chefs prefer them, and the five fixes below are how the good ones get built.

1. Go shallow on one run

Standard base units are 560mm deep. On the secondary run, the one without the sink, 300 to 400mm shallow units (or open shelving) buy you 160 to 260mm of walkway, the difference between two people passing and two people negotiating. Howdens, Wickes and most suppliers do reduced-depth ranges; made-to-measure solves it entirely.

2. Use the alcoves properly

The chimney breast creates two alcoves, and in most terrace kitchens they hold a freestanding fridge and regret. Floor-to-ceiling larders made to the alcove width turn dead space into the densest storage in the house, and scribed side panels make them look built-in because they are.

3. Spend your light

Galleys starve of light at the worktop, exactly where you chop. Under-unit LED strips (£100 to £200 fitted) are the highest-value pounds in a small kitchen. Pair with light door colours, gloss if you can face the fingerprints, and a pale worktop. The room doesn't get bigger; it stops feeling smaller.

4. Choose appliances for the width

Slimline dishwashers (450mm), 500mm fridge-freezers, and two-zone domino hobs exist precisely for these rooms. A full-width dishwasher in a 2.1-metre galley costs you a drawer unit you'll miss every day. The design survey specs appliances to the room, not the other way round.

5. Design the door swings

In a narrow kitchen, every door, room door, appliance door, cabinet door, opens into contested space. Sliding or re-hung room doors, fridge hinges on the correct side, and wall units stopped short of head-height corners are the unglamorous details that decide whether the finished kitchen flows or fights you.

What it costs

A doors-and-lighting refresh on a terrace galley runs £600 to £2,000. A full supply-only redesign and install, shallow runs, alcove larders, lighting, £5,000 to £9,000 all-in, including £2,500 to £4,000 of labour. The installation page covers the process; the quote form starts it with a measured survey.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best layout for a narrow terrace kitchen?

A true galley: one full-depth run with the sink and hob, one shallow run (300–400mm) for storage and prep, tall larders in the alcoves, and under-unit lighting. It out-cooks layouts twice its size.

Can two people cook in a galley kitchen?

Yes, if the walkway is 1,200mm-plus, which is exactly what shallow-depth units buy. Below that, design for one cook and honest about it: zones that don't cross.

How much does a terrace kitchen renovation cost?

£600 to £2,000 for a doors-and-lighting refresh; £5,000 to £9,000 all-in for a full redesign and supply-only install, including £2,500 to £4,000 of labour.

Should I knock the kitchen into the dining room instead?

If the budget stretches, a knock-through (£2,000 to £4,000 structural) transforms terrace living. If it doesn't, a well-designed galley is a genuinely good kitchen, not a compromise.
